mindfulness for social workers

Social work is a complex field fraught with suffering. Being a social worker is a challenging profession. As a long time practitioner of Critical Incident Stress Management and familiar with the burdens of working in healthcare and human services settings, Dawn customizes offerings for social work professionals.

Through Self Compassion & Compassion Cultivation Training, our mission is to co-create a mindful pathway to awaken our hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits to rise above the social and individual constructs we experience as Social Workers.

decolonizing social work by decolonizing ourselves

Social work has long been implicated in acts of colonization. Waking up to the ways we can begin to address the harms of the past begins with unlearning. Mindfulness helps us uncover the habitual conditioning that has allowed for the dehumanisation of others.

Tuck and Yang (2012) tell us that “Decolonization is not a metaphor” and that ultimately involves the repatriation of land. Mindfulness is a pathway of both unlearning the conditioning of colonization and cultivating the compassion and wisdom needed to act skillfully towards the goals of true reconciliation. You can learn more about Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission here. Supporting settlers to understand, process, and co-create the conditions for a more just and equitable world where diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging flourishes in workplaces and communities has never been more valuable.

Decolonizing social work by decolonizing ourselves can be developed by utilizing mindfulness as a pathway. We can awaken ourselves in body, mind, and spirit, and together co-create integrity for social workers by engaging in mindfulness based interventions.
